Facts About Galvanized Steel
Definition
Galvanized steel is made of galvanized steel. After this process, a newly formed zinc-iron coating protects the base metal made of steel. This coating increases the durability and strength of the steel itself through corrosion protection. It also changes the look of steel by giving it a sturdy look.
Overall, after the galvanizing process, the steel becomes stronger and harder to scratch and corrode; this makes it an ideal material for outdoor use.
Luigi Galvani, who lived in the 18th century (1737-1798), was not only a brilliant physicist, but also a renowned physician, philosopher and biologist of his time. He was the one who discovered that animal tissue responds to tiny electrical currents. This result was derived from his experience applying currents to frog legs, and was so important that all kinds of currents were called "currents."
Fifty years later, Sir Humphrey Davy discovered that zinc protects iron from rusting when it comes into contact with iron during an electrochemical process. The procedure was subsequently referred to as "galvanizing".
Galvanizing Involves Zinc
Galvanized steel is protected because it has a protective zinc coating on it. Zinc works in two ways when combined with steel: first, it protects the metal from the atmosphere, and second, it provides cathodic protection.
Galvanizing Is Low-Cost
Galvanized steel in coil is an inexpensive material that lasts a lifetime. Available at the time of purchase, and only a few cents more per pound than untreated steel. Handling steel at a construction site can cost four to five times as much as galvanized steel.
The galvanizing process provides steel with perfect rust and corrosion protection that may last 50 years or more, which is not the case with stainless or structural steel.
If you think that galvanized steel is only used for construction, you are dead wrong.
Since the last century, galvanized steel has become an important material of choice for the automotive industry due to its amazing advantages. It solves a painful problem for users with excellent rust, corrosion and scratch protection on nuts, nails and bolts.
It’s Used not just Constructions
Galvanized steel is also used in outdoor applications such as pipes, bus stops, balconies, stairs, ladders, cattle fences, other products...other materials are not strong enough. You can even find galvanized steel flat sheet in the lighting posts that provide night lighting for the road.
