Galvanized Steel VS. Stainless Steel

Galvanized Steel VS. Stainless Steel

  • 2022/11/16

Fall protection systems can become fragile if they are not constructed of suitable materials that can withstand all the impacts of nature. Galvanizing is a process designed to help steel resist corrosion and provide protection to maintain its appearance and performance. Galvanized and stainless steel are the best materials for corrosion protection of your system.

Galvanized Steel is Dipped for Defense

Galvanized steel is ideal for marine environments because it adds a layer of protection over carbon steel. Standard carbon steel consists of iron and other metals, and the iron reacts with salt water, causing rust. The zinc layer on galvanized steel prevents this reaction. Sites within five miles of the saltwater coast will only use galvanized steel.

Stainless Steel is Built to Last

Stainless steel is widely used in many industries due to its clean and smooth surface. Because of its ease of polishing, stainless steel is used exclusively in the culinary and pharmaceutical industries, and is superior to galvanized steel in terms of surface attractiveness, which can flake and peel.

The compounds that make up stainless steel can last for decades as long as they are not exposed to salt. The absence of rust keeps the surface smooth over the years, whereas other metals that eventually rust create a rough finish. Ultimately, choosing stainless steel will pay off greatly in the long run. Durability avoids replacement equipment or excessive maintenance.

Which is Stronger

Since galvanized steel contains only one rust-resistant coating, it will wear down over time. However, since stainless steel consists of a protective compound of chromium to prevent rust, it is known to last longer than galvanized stainless steel.

While both are moisture resistant, stainless steel performs very well in wet environments. Unlike stainless steel, galvanized steel tends to weaken when exposed to salt water.

Protection matters on an Outdoor Workplace

Corrosion is a burden on any outdoor workplace. In the long run, it pays to use rust-resistant materials. Stainless steel and galvanized steel are the best choices for durability and strength.
