Galvanizing Process: How it is Made

Galvanizing Process: How it is Made

  • 2022/11/01

Many people know what galvanized steel is. It is used in a variety of applications from HVAC ductwork to garden buckets; home decor to trash cans. The sequin finish on the surface makes it visually appealing, but also makes it more durable and corrosion-resistant.

Why should steel be galvanized?

Durability

Galvanized steel provides excellent corrosion protection and is one of the best on the market today. It is 10 times more abrasion resistant than organic paint coatings and has excellent resistance to mechanical damage. With a high degree of chip resistance, this makes galvanized steel easier to handle, store, transport and install on site, helping to prevent damage during construction.

cost effective

Galvanized steel structures require very little maintenance compared to steel that lacks a protective coating. The zinc coating itself is self-healing and reseals in the event of minor damage.

So, how is galvanized steel made? Where did that sequin come from? Well, let's find out.

hot dip galvanized

Hot dip galvanizing is the process of dipping metal into a molten zinc bath (about 680 degrees Fahrenheit). The reaction to oxygen in the air occurs when the material is removed from the zinc bath and cooled. This reaction makes zinc part of the steel (iron-zinc alloy bonds). The new surface finish appears to have a crystalline finish or a shimmery finish.

While this is the most common form of galvanizing, it is often used on previously manufactured steel products because the thickness of the final product is not easily controlled.

Galvanealing

This method is a combination of hot dip galvanizing and annealing processes. The result of galvanizing is a special zinc coating on the steel.

Galvanizing involves hot dipping the steel in a zinc bath, removing excess zinc with an air knife, by flash annealing in seconds. The result of the entire process is an alloy with a matt grey finish that can be cut to various sizes upon request.

Pre-galvanized

This method is also known as mill galvanizing. It is very close to hot dip galvanizing, but is done in a steel mill on a material that already has a specific shape.

The pre-galvanizing process includes some steps of hot-dip galvanizing, such as cleaning the surface, immersion in a hot zinc bath and combined with a backflushing process.

Galvanized steel is like the base material of the world, and in the near future, there may be more advanced methods to simplify the galvanizing process while maintaining the quality of the steel. Understanding galvanized steel coil suppliers  general process of galvanizing and knowing how to select high-quality galvanized steel flat sheet remains the key to the success of your project.
